Aviva Gilbert represents both companies and individuals who need counsel when interacting with the criminal justice system, whether at the state or federal level. She helps shepherd clients through all stages of criminal cases, prepares them for interviews and negotiates outcomes that are favorable to them.
In addition to her white collar criminal defense work, Ms. Gilbert helps conduct internal investigations into possible wrongdoing by board members, executives or employees. Her clients have included corporations in a wide variety of industries, including technology and financial services, as well as large nonprofit organizations.
Some of Ms. Gilbert’s most recent experience includes:
- Representing an individual defendant in parallel federal and state investigations into improper public/private-sector dealings
- Conducting an internal investigation for a large organization involving alleged employee theft
- Assisting a client with state court mandamus proceeding and winning a writ of mandate against a public agency
- Representing individual clients in federal criminal cases involving bank robbery and drug possession
Ms. Aviva maintains an active pro bono practice, including where she recently defended two sisters in eviction proceedings, negotiating a financially favorable settlement allowing them to stay in their home.
Before joining Farella, Ms. Gilbert clerked for the Hon. Wilma A. Lewis, Chief Judge of the U.S. District Court for the Virgin Islands. She was also a Fulbright Fellow from 2007-2008, working at Mexico’s National Institute of Public Health. Prior to becoming a lawyer she was an Associate in the Global Communications and Public Affairs division of Google where she worked on government and education sector issues.
Ms. Gilbert is fluent in Spanish and conversational in Hebrew.
