Joseph Whalen, Insurance & Risk Management Consultant

Joseph Whalen has been an Insurance and Risk Management Consultant with the firm since 1985.

Mr. Whalen specializes in risk assessment, contractual risk transfer and risk financing programs, for commercial real estate development and public works projects, mergers and acquisitions and product development.  He also advises on initial placements and renewals of insurance coverages for corporations and public entities, including advising owners on the advisability, structure and implementation of owner or contractor controlled insurance programs, including such programs for large, urban, mixed-use condominium properties, environmental liability and cost-cap insurance in connection with military base transfers (including the Navy Fleet Industrial Supply Center in Oakland, the Oakland, California Army Base, and the Naval Computer and Telecommunications Station in Stockton, California) and other environmental remediation projects.  He also advises clients on insurance and producer regulatory issues. 

Mr. Whalen has extensive experience in insurance claim preparation and presentation and in the negotiation of insurance claims and disputes on behalf of policyholders, including property, disability and environmental claims.  His risk management consulting clients have included Hearthstone, Inc.; Wilson/Equity Office; Port of Oakland; Kimpton Hotels; Tri-City Brokerage, Inc.; California Academy of Sciences; Catellus Development Corporation; Napa Valley Vintners Association; Kaiser Permanente; Visa USA; Legacy Partners; Wilson, Meany, Sullivan; Meritage Homes; and Applied Materials.

Mr. Whalen also advises the firm's insurance coverage group on insurance industry standards, forms and practices, coverage intent of various insurance contracts, and current developments in insurance products and markets.  He also advises the firm's corporate and real estate attorneys on insurance and risk management issues related to various business and real estate transactions, including those involving environmental exposures.
