Farella Braun + Martel, together with the Shanghai based firm of Watson & Band and leading Chinese academics, conducted a seminar on recent developments in U.S. and Chinese patent and antitrust law.  The seminar was held under the auspices of the Intellectual Property Research Committee of the Shanghai Bar Association.  George Q. Fu of Watson & Band acted as moderator.

John Cooper and Jeff Fisher of Farella gave a presentation on hot topics in U.S. patent litigation Topics included violation of U.S. patent law by actions taken outside of the U.S., recent case law developments, and the interplay between patent law and antitrust law.  

Professor Tao Xinliang, executive vice dean of the Intellectual Property Institute of Shanghai University, spoke on suggestions for revisions to China's Patent Law in the context of the ongoing third revision of that law.

Wu Denglou, judge on the No. 2 Intermediate People's Court of Shanghai, spoke on hot topics in Chinese patent infringement litigation.

Attorneys from Watson & Band spoke on the influence of the new Antitrust Law on the concept of patent abuse.

James A. Farella Braun + Martel's James Mann present "Let's Talk Trash: Or how to stop your old computers from becoming a plaintiff's lawyer's treasure," to the Corporate Law Department Section and the Environmental Law Section of the Bar Association of San Francisco.

Topics:
Important exemptions from hazardous waste control laws have recently expired.  Businesses, large and small, with trash as common as old computers, florescent light bulbs, and TV's may be subject to hazardous waste regulation. The seminar will address:

• California's rules for "e-waste" and what your company needs to do to comply with them
• Related computer disposal issues: Data "wiping," spoliation of evidence, and software license compliance

Richard Van Duzer was a featured speaker at the 18th Annual New York University International Hospitality Industry Investment Conference. He participated in a panel discussion on the opportunities and risks presented by the development, sales and marketing, and operation of condominium hotels, one of the fastest growing segments in the industry.

David Stoll will present on "Brand Protection - Trademarks, Copyrights and Licensing" to the Sonoma Valley Vintners & Growers Alliance.   He will discuss strategies and tips for selecting and protecting wine brands, including what every winery or vineyard owner should know about protection of winery names, wine brands and vineyard designations.

Holly Sutton will be a speaking at an all-day Northern California Human Resources seminar titled "California Wages, Hours & Working Conditions."  The learning objective is to review California's laws regarding wages, hours and working conditions and to avoid potential litigation by learning to comply with state and federal requirements.
