Farella Braun + Martel Awards 2018 Diversity Scholarships to Three Bay Area Law Students

SAN FRANCISCO, May 1, 2018: Farella Braun + Martel LLP has awarded a total of $30,000 in scholarship grants to three Bay Area first-year law students.

The scholarship program is open to 1L Bay Area law students of underrepresented groups whose background or personal experience would contribute to the diversity of the legal profession. Scholarship recipients are chosen based upon a combination of merit and financial need. To date, the firm has awarded $410,000 in scholarships to 74 local first-year law students.

“Congratulations to Nicholas, Bill and Victoria. Each of you impressed our selection committee with your outstanding academic accomplishments and dedication to the community,” said Erica Villanueva, Farella insurance recovery partner and co-chair of the firm’s Diversity + Inclusion Committee. “Since 2001, these scholarships have been at the heart of our efforts to support outstanding diverse students on their way to becoming lawyers.”

2018 scholarship recipients:

Nicholas Gonzalez attends the University of California, Hastings College of the Law. He serves as co-chair of the board of directors for the San Francisco LGBT Community Center  and is a legal clinic volunteer at the Centro Legal de la Raza in Oakland. Nicholas earned a B.A. in political science and history from the University of California at Berkeley. This summer he will be a summer associate at Munger, Tolles & Olson LLP in San Francisco.

Bill Nguyen attends the University of California, Berkeley, School of Law, where he is the symposium editor of the Berkeley Journal of Criminal Law, co-president of the First-Generation Professional Network, member of the Asian Pacific American Law Student Association and Queer Caucus, and a volunteer advocate with Berkeley Law’s Post-Conviction Advocacy Project. He earned a B.A., magna cum laude, from Columbia University in human rights. This summer he will intern with the San Francisco Public Defender’s Office.

Victoria Petty attends the University of California, Berkeley, School of Law, where her activities include serving as a solicitations editor for the Berkeley Journal of African-American Law and Policy; a researcher for the Environmental Conservation Outreach, a member of the Law Students of African Descent and a volunteer for La Raza Workers’ and Tenants’ Rights Clinic. Next year, she will serve as co-president of the Boalt Hall Student Association. She earned a B.S., summa cum laude, in chemical engineering from Howard University. This summer she will intern at Marin Clean Energy.
