2024 Housing Heroes Award: Tom Mayhew
Farella Braun + Martel is proud to announce that partner Tom Mayhew was honored with a Housing Heroes Award by the Housing Action Coalition (HAC) at its 22nd Annual Housing Heroes Awards event on October 16 at the Salesforce Park Amphitheater in San Francisco.
HAC’s annual awards event celebrates housing leaders for their exceptional contributions to creating more housing at all levels of affordability and fostering more diverse, equitable, and inclusive communities across the Bay Area and California. The 2024 Housing Heroes Award honorees also included San Francisco Mayor London Breed, Nor Cal Carpenters Union Executive Officer Jay Bradshaw, the Terner Center for Housing Innovation, and the Lewis Center for Regional Policy.
Tom was honored for his work in developing and pursuing a legal strategy to counteract the effects of restrictive local zoning laws, with the goal of removing legal obstacles so that the housing the Bay Area needs can be built. The work includes analyzing city housing plans in detail to identify cities that are avoiding their responsibility to rezone more sites for construction of housing affordable to those with lower and moderate incomes, alerting the State of California Department of Housing and Community Development to legal violations, and pursuing follow-up litigation against those cities that do not voluntarily come into compliance.
