Farella Braun + Martel: A Statement of Solidarity and Commitment to Equal Justice

June 15, 2020 Announcement

At the heart of Farella Braun + Martel’s core values is an unwavering commitment to create a community where everyone is treated equitably and respectfully. We condemn in the strongest terms the recent tragic killings of George Floyd, Ahmaud Arbery, and Breonna Taylor, two at the hands of the police, and all of whom are part of a long history of systemic racism, violence, discrimination, and injustice towards the Black community. This is the moment where we all must take a stand and stop the cycle.

As attorneys we have a duty and the privilege to help ensure equal access to justice and speak out against injustice and police brutality. This is a critical moment in history and we as lawyers must fight for a better future.

We start by looking internally and taking the time to listen to the concerns and experiences of all firm members and commit to continuing a dialogue that fosters empathy, equity, and belonging. We will continue to hold firm wide trainings to educate our members on overt and implicit bias and racism and what we can do to identify and confront it. We know that this is not enough, and will continue to examine ways to increase diversity and inclusion within our own ranks.

Farella has a long history of supporting organizations fighting for racial justice and civil rights financially and through leadership roles in advocacy organizations and pro bono work. Farella’s pro bono work has focused on social justice issues on behalf of Black, Indigenous, People of Color both in individual matters and in cases seeking relief to rectify widescale wrongs. We pledge to continue this support.

We understand that achieving equality and justice will require comprehensive reforms that require all of us to work together and take action against racism. Taking action is empowering. If we are all agents for positive change, collectively, we can make a difference.
