Farella Braun + Martel Partners Robert Hines and Nan Joesten Appointed to American Bar Association Leadership Positions

August 23, 2010 Announcement

SAN FRANCISCO, August 23, 2010:  Farella Braun + Martel partners Buzz Hines and Nan Joesten were appointed to leadership positions for the American Bar Association (ABA) and will serve terms through August 2011, and August 2012, respectively.  Hines serves as division director of Division III - CLE and Programs for the ABA's  Section of Litigation.  The ABA's Section of Litigation named Joesten co-chair of the ABA 2012 Annual Meeting in Chicago, Illinois.

In his ABA role, Hines serves as a primary point of contact for CLE programming and resources related to Division III for the Section of Litigation members.  At Farella, Hines chairs Farella's Air Quality and Climate Change Group and has practiced environmental law for nearly 25 years.  He represents clients in complex governmental and private litigation and enforcement actions, including state and federal cost recovery actions, natural resource damage claims, air and water and hazardous waste actions, and multi-media agency proceedings.  Buzz leads internal investigations and assists clients with voluntary disclosures.  He provides regulatory representation and compliance counseling regarding a broad array of issues, including climate change and GHG advice, permitting, administrative variance proceedings, and site investigations and cleanup.

Hines' appointment follows his term as co-chair of the ABA 2010 Annual Meeting in San Francisco, California and two terms on other ABA committees, including co-chairing the Alternative Dispute Resolution Committee and co-chairing the Environmental Litigation Committee.  A court appointed mediator with the U.S. District Court for the Northern District of California, he is a frequent speaker on environmental law topics.  Hines earned his J.D. from Golden Gate University (1985) and his B.A. in economics from the University of California, Berkeley (1980).  Following a U.S. District Court clerkship from 1985 to 1986, Hines worked as a Trial Attorney with the Environmental Enforcement Section of the U.S. Department of Justice (hired through DOJ's Honors program).

On behalf of the Section of Litigation, Joesten will play a large role in planning the Aug. 2-4, 2012 ABA Annual Meeting in Chicago, Illinois.  Joesten's complex litigation practice emphasizes intellectual property matters, including patent and trademark disputes, trade secret misappropriation cases, and technology-related litigation for both U.S. and international companies.  She recently completed a two-year term as president of the Boalt Hall Alumni Association, was awarded the UC Berkeley Foundation Trustee's Citation Award for outstanding service to Berkeley Law School in 2007, and has been named the recipient of Berkeley Law's Young Alumni Achievement Award for 2010.

Joesten's ABA appointment follows her terms as co-chair of the ABA Section of Litigation's Woman Advocate Committee and previously its Mentoring Subcommittee.  Joesten received her J.D. from the University of California, Berkeley Law School (1997) and her B.S. in chemical engineering from the University of Colorado at Boulder (1982), where she serves as a member of the Engineering Advisory Council.  Prior to her legal career, Joesten was a manufacturing engineer and an advertising brand manager for the Procter & Gamble Company.

The ABA has more than 400,000 members and provides law school accreditation, continuing legal education, information about the law, programs to assist lawyers and judges in their work, and initiatives to improve the legal system for the public.
