Farella Braun + Martel Wins $43.1 Million Breach of Contract and Misappropriation of Trade Secrets Decision for Atmel Corporation

SAN FRANCISCO, CA (December 7, 2005): Farella Braun + Martel LLP announced today that a team led by partner John Cooper won a substantial award in an arbitration on behalf of Atmel Corporation, a worldwide leader in the development, fabrication, and sale of advanced semiconductors. 

The International Arbitration Tribunal for the International Centre for Dispute Resolution awarded Atmel approximately $43.1 million in damages, finding LM Ericsson Telefon, AB liable for numerous breaches of contract as well as the misappropriation of trade secrets relating to Atmel’s proprietary AVR microcontroller technology.

As part of the decision, the Arbitration Panel also awarded Atmel an immediate injunction against Ericsson and those “acting in concert or participation with it,” including Sony Ericsson and Texas Instruments.
