Farella Braun + Martel’s John Cooper Recognized Among ADR Champions by the National Law Journal

June 1, 2018 Accolades

Farella Braun + Martel LLP Partner John L. Cooper was named to the National Law Journal’s esteemed list of 2018 ADR Champions. The publication features 46 lawyers nationwide who continue to make their mark in the area of alternative dispute resolution.

According to the National Law Journal, a common thread among the honorees is their deep passion and perseverance in pursuit of their mission and track record of success. Read Cooper’s ADR Champions profile, here.

Cooper was chosen as special master for one of the biggest, most-watched cases involving sensitive data and powerful competitors. In the feud between Waymo and Uber, Cooper sat at the center of “the battle for the future of the autonomous vehicle industry.” Vital to keeping the case running, he was a neutral party, heading off fights over access to sensitive documents and ensuring compliance with the judge’s orders. When Waymo’s lawyers needed to inspect Uber’s devices/files to gather evidence, it was Cooper who determined whether Uber could keep them under wraps. In other instances, he stood by to ensure such opportunities to review competitor technology weren’t abused.

And the colossal Waymo/Uber battle was not Cooper’s first epic special master role. In the early 2000s, he served the court in the antitrust cases against Microsoft – another highly complex and industry-rocking matter that ended in settlement. Cooper also figured prominently (and neutrally) in the 2012 Oracle and Google showdown over Android technology.

Cooper has served as Regent and is a long standing Fellow in the American College of Trial Lawyers. He is listed in Best Lawyers in America in the areas of Commercial Litigation, Litigation–Antitrust, Litigation–Intellectual Property, and Litigation–Patent.
