The Doctors Company, Advised by Farella Braun + Martel, Completes Acquisition of FPIC Insurance Group for $362 Million

SAN FRANCISCO (October 19, 2011):  Farella Braun + Martel advised Napa-based The Doctors Company, the country's largest insurer of physician and surgeon medical professional liability, in its $362 million purchase of FPIC Insurance Group, Inc. (NASDAQ: FPIC), a major provider of health care liability insurance in Florida, Texas, Georgia and Arkansas.  The transaction was finalized today. 

With the completion of the merger and the addition of 18,000 insureds, The Doctors Company solidifies its position as the nation's largest insurer of physician and surgeon medical liability, with 71,000 member physicians.

Farella Business Partner Philip Peters served as lead counsel on the overall transaction.  Peters has now led The Doctors Company's outside legal team on five consecutive acquisitions valued in excess of $1.2 billion.  Tax Partner Said Kordestani took the lead on complex corporate tax and executive compensation issues.  Business Partner Jonathan Lemberg and Business Associates Jesse Debban and Nilima Patel also played valuable roles.
