Farella Braun + Martel Named to The National Law Journal Pro Bono Hot List

January 5, 2015 Announcement

SAN FRANCISCO, January 5, 2015: Farella Braun + Martel is pleased to announce that the firm has been named to The National Law Journal’s Pro Bono Hot List. Farella is among 10 law firms in the United States recognized for exemplary pro bono contributions.

The National Law Journal profile on Farella features its successful defense of Sunnyvale, Calif.’s Measure C gun safety ordinance in separate lawsuits in state and federal courts. Measure C requires Sunnyvale gun owners to report firearms thefts within 48 hours, bars possession of high-capacity magazines that hold more than 10 rounds within city limits, and requires firearms dealers to log ammunition sales.

After Sunnyvale passed Measure C, the NRA and another like-minded organization, the National Shooting Sports Foundation, followed through with their threats to challenge the ordinance in court by filing two actions claiming violations of the Second and Fourth Amendments of the United States Constitution. The Law Center to Prevent Gun Violence sought out Farella Partner Rod Thompson to serve as lead counsel in those two separate lawsuits representing the City of Sunnyvale on a pro bono basis. Thompson’s and Farella Litigation Partner Tony Schoenberg’s successful defense of Sunnyvale in these cases provides other municipalities with a road map and legal precedents for implementing similar gun violence prevention ordinances.
