Kelly Matayoshi Receives 2022 Barristers Diversity Award
Farella Braun + Martel is proud to announce that partner Kelly Matayoshi has received the 2022 Barristers Diversity Award from the Bar Association of San Francisco’s (BASF) Barristers Club. The award was presented at the 14th Annual Barristers Club Diversity Awards Reception at the 2022 Diversity Conference and reflects an individual’s efforts to increase awareness of diversity issues in the Bay Area legal community.
During her term as president of the Barristers Club, Kelly facilitated a partnership with the Minority Bar Coalition leading to the creation of the diversity task force and culminating in the first ever diversity conference being held in 2020. A hallmark of her presidency was the creation of BASF's Barristers Racial Justice Initiative (RJI) to raise awareness and increase education around racial issues. In the span of 5 months, the RJI put on 10 programs aimed at educating not only the legal community, but also the public on issues ranging from know your rights training to qualified immunity. In 2021, she was the recipient of the Outstanding Barristers Award at BASF’s Annual Membership Luncheon.
At Farella, Kelly represents a broad range of local and international companies with complex contract disputes, products liability claims, and subrogation defense. She has extensive experience defending clients in the consumer products space. She also represents employers on a range of causes of action, including wrongful termination and class action wage and hour disputes. She is co-chair the firm’s Consumer Products Initiative. Kelly is a past president of both BASF’s Barristers Club and the UC Hastings Board of Governors. She serves on the advisory board for the UC Hastings Center for Litigation and Courts and is a member of the UC Hastings Foundation Board of Trustees and San Francisco Superior Court’s Elimination of Bias Committee. She serves as secretary for the Asian American Bar Association of the Greater Bay Area and is the former co-chair of the ABA Section of Litigation’s Labor & Employment Committee. She is recognized in The Best Lawyers in America: Ones to Watch in the areas of Commercial Litigation and Product Liability Litigation - Defendants (2021). Kelly received her J.D., magna cum laude, from UC Hastings College of the Law in 2012.
