Farella Bolsters Intellectual Property Litigation Practice: Welcomes Partner Jim Day and Associate Winston Liaw

SAN FRANCISCO, January 21, 2014: Farella Braun + Martel LLP welcomes James L. Day as a partner and Winston Liaw as an associate to its Intellectual Property Litigation Department. Both attorneys have an emphasis in patent litigation and further enhance Farella’s bench of IP attorneys with deep technology backgrounds.

A seasoned trial lawyer, Day represents Internet and other high technology companies in intellectual property and complex commercial disputes, with an emphasizes in patent infringement and trade secret misappropriation lawsuits. His degree in electrical engineering/computer science and experience working as a software engineer and consultant provide a technical proficiency and credibility with judges, juries, and his client’s internal technical experts. Day is licensed to practice before the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office. He earned his J.D., magna cum laude, from the University of California, Hastings College of the Law (1998) and his B.S. in electrical engineering and computer science from the University of California, Davis (1991). He joins Farella from the San Francisco office of Latham & Watkins, where he has practiced for the past 16 years.

 

Liaw has represented high technology clients in nearly all aspects of patent litigation and mediation, including claim construction, expert discovery, and infringement and validity analyses. His clients have included semiconductor, multimedia, telecommunications, and web technology companies, among others. Prior to his legal career, he worked for Microsoft Corporation as a software development engineer and program manager. Liaw earned his J.D. with honors from the University of Chicago Law School (2010) and his B.S. in electrical engineering and computer science from the University of California at Berkeley (2002). He joins Farella from Keker & Van Nest in San Francisco.
